This week will feature a how-to video on the proper way to
wrap your horse’s legs for a ride. I will let my video do most of the talking,
but I also want to make sure we all understand the importance of wrapping your
horse’s legs before a ride!
Your horse has strong, yet delicate legs. As I have
mentioned earlier, Lenny is out for the season with a ligament injure that
happened in a routine day in his pasture. Polo
wraps, as shown in this video, are the most difficult, yet one of the most
effective ways to protect your horse’s leg.
In addition to leg wraps, horse
owners should consider purchasing bellboots which strap around the horse’s ankle to protect the heel and prevent
your horse from pulling a shoe (resulting in a hefty farrier bill). Protection
is a win-win situation when it comes to owning horses!
To begin, we will start by discussing how to roll the polos
in preparation for wrapping. It is imperative that both the polos and your
horse’s leg are clean before you wrap the leg! We have quite a few sets of polo
wraps in our barn, and we do our best to use a clean pair every time we wrap a
horse. Additionally, dirty polos risk spreading fungus from one horse to
another.
Start with these 3 simple steps:
1.
First, take a clean polo and fold the Velcro
onto itself, as shown in the image provided.
2.
Now, roll the polo forward, towards the Velcro.
I like to roll with the polo pressed against my leg to ensure it is rolled
tightly—a crucial step when it comes to wrapping a horse’s leg.
3.
Finally, roll all the way to the end, and then
tuck a corner into the wrap to keep it from unrolling. And now, you are ready
to wrap!
And now, you are ready
to wrap!
